A traditional documentary photo is an image that shows the information you want to share. In early documentary photo days, that meant a head-on photo; the camera would be parallel to the subject. Make it more interesting by shooting from below or above the subject. Tilt the camera. Photograph in low light and in the middle of the day, breaking the rules. Don’t forget to show the subject as is and do not do big edits; after all, it’s a documentary photo. You can tweak the exposure, and that is about it.
“Day in a life” photography is fun and spontaneous, and anything goes in terms of style. Photograph the everyday things you do, like an expresso in the afternoon, a walk at a park, a statute you saw, or a beautiful flower in a vase. It’s all about you and your day and how you look at the world around you.
Candid photography is spontaneous photography. Shoot things around you in any style and in no specific order or subject. Go after things that interest you, chase the shiny things, and have fun!
