A Spanish Tapas Heaven in Lisbon

I recently had a delicious late lunch at a charming little tapas spot in the Bairo Alto near Principe Real Park. 

Imanol Barra Basca was delicious and fun just as a Spanish tapas place should be. 🙂

Counter eating, fantastic taps, and a fun atmosphere

This is an excellent restaurant for solo diners, families, and small groups, especially for us ladies over 50 who appreciate a good meal, great wine, and a welcoming vibe. 🙂

The Setup at Imanol

As I went in, I noticed something brilliant: couples and groups are seated upfront at these clever, long counter setups.

It’s not a punishment to the solo diners; this layout is designed so groups can sit facing each other and chat away, unlike the usual long counter where you end up staring at your friend’s ear.

Meanwhile, solo diners (like yours truly) enjoy a prime spot facing the tapas counter and the seats around the restaurant.

I was delighted to be seated at the counter facing the action, with a full view of all the tapas laid out before me—talk about a feast for the eyes!

My spot was not just for solo diners—there were many small groups around me, and some people stood so that they could be closer to their friends, just like they do in any tapas place in Spain.

Service at Imanol Barra Basca: Thoughtful & Attentive

The service was on point. The manager welcomed me warmly, guided me to my seat, and pointed out the handy hook under the counter for my bag.

Yes, you read that right—a hook for your bag! No more awkwardly balancing it on your knees or fretting about where to put it.

These little thoughtful touches make all the difference, don’t they?

I started my meal with a glass of dry, fruity, and not-too-sweet white wine, which set the tone for what would come. Then, it was time to dig into the tapas.

  • Jamon Croquetas: Creamy on the inside, crunchy on the outside.

  • Basque Sausage with Baguette: Savory, smoky, and oh-so-satisfying. The perfect bite with just enough spice.

  • Bocadillo de Burrata: Fresh, creamy burrata paired with a sweet tomato jam over crusty bread.

The Ambiance at Imanol Barra Basca

The soundscape was equally delightful. Light, soothing Spanish tunes played softly in the background—not loud enough to drown out conversation, but just enough to set a relaxing mood.

You can actually hear your own thoughts here, which, let’s be honest, is a rare treat these days!

I finished off with the lightest cheesecake I’ve ever tasted. This “tarte de queijo” was so fluffy it was like eating a cloud.

Next time I go, I will pair the cheesecake with a sweet dessert wine.

As the afternoon turned into evening, more people trickled in, filling the place with a pleasant buzz and it was time for me to leave!

If you’re looking for a spot where you can savor each bite, sip on delicious wine (Ramon Bilbao, highly recommended!), and enjoy a relaxed yet vibrant atmosphere, then this is your go-to. I loved Imanol.
