50 and Rising Book Club: Fall’s Exciting Reading List
Cozy stories, mysteries, inspiring memoirs, and thought-provoking reads for cooler days.
As the days grow shorter here in Lisbon, I find myself reading books that slow me down. Fall is my favorite season. The weather is pretty warm, the sun is so bright during the day, and the darker afternoons invite me to a cup of tea, my sofa, a giant pillow, and a good book.
Welcome to the 50 and Rising Book Club: Fall Reading List.
The list is a mix of inspiring memoirs, gentle fiction, creative journeys, and a few cozy mysteries that keep you turning the pages. These are the books that fit perfectly with the rhythm of autumn and the over 50 woman.
Memoirs and Stories of Creative Lives
My Favorite Things, by Maira Kalman
A beautiful blend of words and illustrations by one of my favorite artists.
Kalman’s reflections on everyday life. From family gatherings, picnics, shoes, and photos, she reminds us that beauty can be found in the smallest things. It’s a book you can return to over and over, each time noticing something new. I am a big fan of her illustrations.
Accidental Icon by Iris Apfel
Iris Apfel proves that life after 90 can be full of style, humor, and reinvention. Her voice is lively, confident, and playful. It’s not just a memoir; it’s a reminder that age has nothing to do with creativity or relevance and that you can start over whenever you want, such an inspiration to women over 50.
Books for Curiosity and Well-Being
Just One Thing – Dr. Michael Mosley
This is an easy and uplifting read, filled with small actions that can make a massive difference to your health and happiness.
To the Island of Tides by Alistair Moffat
For readers who love walking, history, and quiet landscapes, this book is a gem. Moffat retraces the ancient pilgrimage route to Lindisfarne in north-east England. He interconnects travel with reflections on life, faith, and the natural world. It’s such a beautiful book and a must if you plan to visit Lindisfarne.

Fiction to Curl Up With
Tom Lake — Ann Patchett
A gentle story about family, love, and memory. Patchett has a gift for creating characters who feel real. I’m a big fan.
Bad Summer People — Emma Rosenblum
Think of this as your fun, fast read when you want something sharp and full of social drama. It’s witty, modern, and perfect for those early evenings when you want to escape for a few chapters.

Cozy Mysteries for Rainy Afternoons
I’ve set aside some of the darker murder stories for another list, I can’t let fall go by without at least a couple of cozy mysteries.
The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman
The charming group of retirees solving crimes in their peaceful village is always worth revisiting.
Death in Dordogne by Martin Walker
Martin Walker’s series about Bruno the Chief of Police is fantastic. Bruno is a fun, friendly, and fantastic cook, as well as a highly respected chief of police in the Dordogne region. The series revolves around solving crimes, French cuisine, culture, and more. Bruno is my hero!
Reading Tip
I keep two books going at once many times, one that makes me think and one that entertains me. It keeps reading enjoyable and flexible. Some days call for introspection, while others call for pure escape.
I also listen to many audiobooks, and I love hearing them while I am on my road trips in Portugal.
