The Midnight Espresso: A Hidden Lisbon spot for solo travelers, single people, groups and night owls
If you’re wandering near Príncipe Real or Praça das Flores and stumble upon a dark green curtain covering a door at Rua Cecilio de Sousa 1A, don’t walk away—this is The Midnight Espresso, one of Lisbon’s most charming cafes.
The curtain is simply part of its coziness, and it keeps the place warm in the winter!
Walking in, you will hear the soft hum of classic jazz (my favorite!), and quiet conversations. The dark wooden floors, vintage photographs on the walls, and shelves lined with tins of fine teas set a tone that feels like a blend of bohemian spirit and “Old Portugal” with a contemporary flair.
I visited the Midnight Espresso around five o’clock for tea and was immediately drawn to the lovely atmosphere. My table by the window had a sweet green fabric mat and a small candle, and a comfy seat. It was the perfect setting to unwind.
I like black tea, and the owner suggested I drink Earl Grey. Earl Grey is usually not my favorite, but I was sold after inhaling the fresh aroma from the tin. This Earl Grey had more petals, leaves, and amazing aromas, making it different from the usual Earl Grey!
The tea arrived in a glass teapot, steeped to perfection—there was no need for sugar or honey—it was that good.
Within minutes, the Midnight Espresso was full. Some guests were turned away or asked to wait unless they had booked ahead—a clear sign of this place’s popularity.
The Midnight Espresso has only eight tables, and the space feels intimate—ideal for solo travelers seeking a peaceful break, families, and small groups catching up over tea, coffee, or a drink.
While the tea selection is outstanding, The Midnight Espresso also offers coffee and a cocktail menu worth exploring.
Their signature Midnight Espresso Martini is on my list for my next visit.
The Midnight Espresso is perfect for when you’re in the mood for a pre-dinner drink, a happy hour catch-up, or a late-night nightcap. It’s a great spot to start or end the evening!
They serve scones and pastries until midnight. What a great way to end the evening.
One important note: this isn’t the place to bring your laptop. It’s a space designed for conversation, relaxation, and enjoying what’s in front of you.
The staff is attentive and never rushes you out the door.
The Principe Real park is a 5-minute walk from The Midnight Espresso, which is also close to Seagull Method .
Go down the hill to the Praça das Flores to visit another charming garden surrounded by beautiful buildings. Lisbon has so many small and charming plazas and gardens.
Do you have time to visit the botanical garden? Go up the hill to the Jardim Botânico de Lisboa.
For women over 50, solo travelers, friends, or anyone looking for a unique Lisbon experience, The Midnight Espresso is a must-visit! I was impressed.
Pro tip: Book your table in advance—this place won’t stay hidden long.
