When is the Best Time to Visit Estremoz for a Day Trip from Lisbon?

If you’re planning a trip from Lisbon, aim for Saturday.

The main plaza fills with people from all over, including visitors from Spain crossing the border to hunt for bargains.

The weekly market spreads across Rossio Square with stalls offering a mix of antiques, secondhand finds, textiles, jewelry, clothes, and more.

It’s a mix of shopping, people-watching, and enjoying life in the Alentejo.

The Food Market

Right next to the flea market, you’ll find the food stalls.

Local families sell vegetables and fruit grown in their backyards, olive oil from communal presses, wild mushrooms, asparagus, and fresh flowers.

In late spring, look out for small sweet figs that locals swear by.

And don’t miss the knife sharpener who pedals his bicycle through the market with trays of knives balanced on the front wheel-he’s part of the tradition here.

After the market, head uphill to the castle. You’ll find a small museum, exhibits inside the church, and the tower steps leading to sweeping views of the city and countryside.

The cobblestone streets around the castle are worth wandering, with antique shops tucked into corners.

When you’re ready for a break, stop for coffee at the Pousada Castelo. Sitting inside the historic walls makes for a nice pause before more exploring.
