May is for a Marvão road trip!
Marvão is a charming medieval town in the middle of Serra Mamede perched up on a very steep hill in the District of Portoalegre.
The weather is warm during the day and cool in the evenings—perfect for exploring without melting.
The summer crowds haven’t arrived yet, and the views of the
São Mamede mountains are wide open and clear.
The light in May is something else. If you’re thinking about a road trip through Portugal, this is a good place to start and a great time to travel.
By bus: 7 Rios bus station via Rede Expressos
A car gives you the freedom to stop at castles, vineyards, stone circles, and quiet villages along the way. You may want to plan for a picnic too!
Spring and fall.
Winter is colder, and the streets are quieter, but the fog makes everything look straight out of a medieval storybook.
If you go in July, yes—it’s hot, but there’s a classical music festival that turns the heat into part of the experience.
Minimum temperature: 16.7C (62F)
Maximum temperature 22.5C (72F)
It gets warmer during the daytime so get ready to peel off your layers.
The Marvão castle was built in the 9th century by Ibn Marwan (al-Jillīqī, a Muwallad). In 1160 – 1166, it was later under Spanish rule. In 1641, the Marvão castle became a defense fortification.
The castle has been through a lot but it’s still standing and has the most beautiful views..
You must layer because it’s cooler in the mornings and evenings and can get quite warm during the day.
