Hidden gems in Lisbon: Where to go to for local spots in Lisbon

Table of Contents

A guide to Lisbon’s hidden gems by neighborhood that I return to often.

Local Tips

Lisbon is more than the main sites. These are the hidden gems I go to when I want a different side of the city.

How to explore hidden gems in Lisbon

Some of the best moments in Lisbon happen between stops. Look at small things, shop windows, people sitting outside, the way the street changes from one block to the next.

Where to find hidden gems in Lisbon

Look  for a different side of Lisbon, and focus on:

  • Residential neighbourhoods.
  • Smaller cafes and Kiosks.
  • Local markets.
  • Streets where daily life is visible.

Campo de Ourique and Estrela’s hidden gems

Campo de Ourique feels more like a village than a neighborhood. It’s easy to walk (no hills), it’s local, and a good place to slow down.

The Kiosk in the Jardim is one of my regular stops. It is a charming spot for coffee and where you can sit and watch daily life.

The market in Campo de Ourique is a “must.” Inside you will find a mix of small food spots and local shops.

OW Otherwise is a men’s clothing store, but many pieces work well for women.

Dom Pastor  focuses on wool pieces from Serra da Estrela. You will also find pastries and local products.

Metro Creativo for silk scarves and textile designs. It’s a few blocks from the market.

If you like French bread, Lully is known for its baguettes and pastries.

Stop by the kiosk for coffee and pastries.

Best hidden gems in Saldanha area

Parque Eduardo VII is a great park to take a break from sightseeing.

Visit the Estufa Fria, the botanical garden inside the Parque Eduardo VII if you love exotic plants.

The Mercado 31 de Janeiro is the local market in Saldanha and a good spot for lunch or dinner.

Club de Chateaux is a French wine bar focused on French wines and cheese. It’s where you can get a sense of the expat life in Lisbon.

Quiet places to stop during the day

  • The Gulbenkian garden  is a carefully curated garden and an ideal place to relax.
  •  Av. da Liberdade has shady benches where you can sit and take in the city.
