The cons of traveling to Portugal in the summer
Some parts of Portugal can get extremely hot, reaching temperatures of 90°F (30°C) and above. The Alentejo area can reach temperatures of around 98°F (37 °C) and above.
Many Airbnb’s and smaller hotels do not have air conditions.
Heatwaves are common, making it challenging to organize your daily activities, as you should probably sty indoors.
Many stores and restaurants are closed because Portuguese like to take the summer off. They usually take the month of August off.
Hotels are more expensive during the high summer months.
It’s crowded, so get ready for long lines and crowded beaches and restaurants. Find out where the less popular places are!
Pickpocketing is on the rise (all year round) and tends to thrive during the summer.
Gorgeous and less crowded Beaches:
Vila do Conde
Praia da Arda
Praia do Moledo
The Alentejo coast: Porto Covo and Odeceixe among other places are great summer spots. They are popular so book ahead but the great thing about this area is that you can go on fantastic road trips and find quiet beaches along the way.
Waterfalls, lagoons and nature
The Peneda-Gerês area is beautiful but it is a popular spot for Portuguese to vacation so book ahead.
Where not to go during the summer in Portugal.
Alentejo is beautiful and it’s my favourite area in Portugal, but unbearably hot during the summer.
Having said that: Marvão has a fantastic classical musical festival in July!
