Does Portugal have heatwaves?

Yes. A heatwave can last from 1 do 7 days or more.

What to do when you get caught in a heatwave in Portugal.

Plan to wake up early and do your outdoor activities until 10:am. Some people are more heat-tolerant and can stay out until 11:00 am. Stay out of the sun during the hottest time of the day.

Live like the Spanish and the Italians! They really know how to make the most of summer.

Stay indoors until late afternoon, then go out for gelato, sightseeing, cafe lounging, hiking before nightfall and more beach time. Eat dinner outdoors.

Always carry water with you.

A hat or a “sunbrella” is a must.

Wear light clothes.

Tips: for what to pack for a trip to Lisbon

Make sure your hotel or rented spot has air conditioning because you will welcome the break from the heat.

If you feel sick, go to a pharmacy and ask for advice. However If you are very sick, go to the emergency or urgent care at a hospital.

Pros and Cons of traveling in the summer in Portugal

  • Pros of traveling in the summer:
  • The weather is great.
  • It does not rain.
  • It’s a fantastic time to visit the beach (avoid the hottest time of the day).
  • You can do so many outdoor activities like sailing, water skiing, hiking, play tennis or golf and more.
  • The ocean water is a tiny bit warmer so you can swim.

The cons of traveling to Portugal in the summer

Some parts of Portugal can get extremely hot, reaching temperatures of 90°F (30°C) and above. The Alentejo area can reach temperatures of around 98°F (37 °C) and above.

Many Airbnb’s and smaller hotels do not have air conditions.

Heatwaves are common, making it challenging to organize your daily activities, as you should probably sty indoors.

Many stores and restaurants are closed because Portuguese like to take the summer off. They usually take the month of August off.

Hotels are more expensive during the high summer months.

It’s crowded, so get ready for long lines and crowded beaches and restaurants. Find out where the less popular places are!

Pickpocketing is on the rise (all year round) and tends to thrive during the summer.

Where are the best places to go in Portugal during July and August?

Gorgeous and less crowded Beaches:

Vila do Conde
Praia da Arda
Praia do Moledo

The Alentejo coast: Porto Covo and Odeceixe among other places are great summer spots. They are popular so book ahead but the great thing about this area is that you can go on fantastic road trips and find quiet beaches along the way.

Waterfalls, lagoons and nature

The Peneda-Gerês area is beautiful but it is a popular spot for Portuguese to vacation so book ahead.

Where not to go during the summer in Portugal.

Alentejo is beautiful and it’s my favourite area in Portugal, but unbearably hot during the summer.

Having said that: Marvão has a fantastic classical musical festival in July!
