Are you coming to Lisbon in the fall?

Packing for Lisbon in the fall: Think layers all the way!

Study the weather channels before you travel, but be ready for different types of weather when you arrive.

When you travel during the fall, chances are you will get all sorts of temperatures, so the idea is to layer. All your clothes should be lightweight.

Choose a color palette.

I have friends who love colors and pack colorful clothes. I focus on neutral colors and pack a few bright things to change my looks. I choose three neutral colors and use my accessories to enhance them.

For example, I’m going to the States in the fall, and my color palette will be olive green, black, and white. My scarves will add color to the palette, and I’m packing fun earrings. I’m taking a fantastic purple and neon green pasticcino bag to cheer up my black evening clothes. I can layer everything comfortably, and I’m ready for any weather (I think!). If I need something, I can purchase it during my trip!

Combinations of neutral color palettes

Gray, black, white

Black, beige, white

Black, gray, dark blue

Dark blue, gray, white

Dark green, beige, white

Note that I always choose three colors, which is the best way to combine all your clothes in the suitcase. Your fourth and fifth colors can be in a scarf, earrings, or a necklace.

If you aren’t in love with neutrals and you love color, here are a few color palettes combined with neutrals

Red, black, gray

Pink, black, white

Light blue, charcoal, black

Patterns (checkered or abstract designs), black, caramel, or another neutral color that is in one of your patterns

Pack scarves with patterns containing your color palette.

Skirts or shorts?

When packing for Lisbon in the fall, should bring shorts or a skirt?

You may get lucky and have a very hot day during your trip, so if you like shorts or Bermuda shorts, bring them or pack a skirt.

I am a big fan of skirts because you can wear them for sightseeing and change the top for a fancier evening look. You can wear them in the cold weather with stockings or no stockings in the warm weather. You will always look lovely in a skirt.

What to do before packing for Lisbon in the fall?

Try on all your clothes before you pack.

Make sure you can wear the sweater under the blazer and button down the blazer! Do the same with your puffer jacket.

You can layer your long-sleeve T-shirts with your shirts, so try that on.

All your clothes should fit nicely and feel comfortable.

Study your variations and use the scarves to add color and to change your looks.

What if you arrive in Lisbon and the weather does not match your weather channel predictions and packing?

Don’t worry. If you come to Lisbon and find it too cold or hot, you can purchase nice things here. Zara is everywhere, and you will find fantastic designer stores in Chiado and Avenida Liberdade or go to a mall.

FAQ what to know about Lisbon in the fall

FAQ What You Should Know About Visiting Lisbon in the Fall

Fall in Lisbon is a mix of sunshine, cooler evenings, and occasional rain. Some days feel warm enough for short sleeves, while others might call for a light jacket. The weather has been unpredictable recently, so packing layers is the best strategy. A travel umbrella or a rain jacket can come in handy, but you’ll still get plenty of beautiful days to explore the city.

Are there any national holidays in Lisbon during the fall?

Yes, and some may affect store hours and public transport. Here are the main ones:

  • October 5 – Republic Day (Dia da Implantação da República)
  • November 1 – All Saints’ Day (Dia de Todos os Santos) – A day of remembrance when many families visit cemeteries.
  • November 11 – São Martinho (St. Martin’s Day) – Celebrated more in smaller towns with roasted chestnuts and new wine.
  • December 1 – Restoration of Independence Day (Restauração da Independência)
  • December 8 – Feast of the Immaculate Conception (Dia da Imaculada Conceição)
  • December 25 – Christmas (Natal) – Many shops and restaurants will be closed.

If you’re visiting around these dates, check to see if your favorite spots will be open.

Can you swim in the ocean in the fall?

You can, but the water is cold; it’s cold year-round. Some locals and surfers swim year-round, but you might find it a bit chilly if you’re used to warmer waters.

Is fall a good time to visit Lisbon?

Absolutely. The city is cooler, making it great for walking and exploring without the summer crowds. You’ll also find seasonal dishes in restaurants—think roasted chestnuts, hearty soups, and dishes with freshly harvested mushrooms. Outdoor cafés are still lively, and the evenings are just right for a drink on a rooftop terrace.

Are hotels cheaper in the fall?

Not really. While summer is the busiest time, Lisbon has become a year-round destination. Prices don’t drop significantly, especially in popular areas. Booking early can help you get better deals.

Is the city crowded in the fall?

Lisbon is less crowded than in summer, but it is no longer a hidden gem. September and October are especially popular with travelers who prefer cooler weather. It quiets down by November, but you’ll still see plenty of visitors. If you want to try a particular restaurant or tour, it’s best to book in advance.

Anything else to keep in mind?

  • The days get shorter, so plan your outdoor activities accordingly.
  • Comfortable walking shoes are a must—Lisbon’s hills and cobblestone streets can be tricky.
  • Many museums and attractions have reduced hours in the off-season, so check schedules ahead of time.
  • Local markets are a great place to pick up seasonal treats.

Enjoy your trip! Lisbon in the fall has a special charm, and there’s plenty to explore.
