Canalha Restaurant
Eating alone can be more than just a bite; it can be a little celebration of enjoying your own company.
That’s exactly what my day turned into when I treated myself to lunch at Canalha and a visit to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belem to see the new exhibits.
I’ve been to Canalha Restaurant before. The first time, I went with a friend, and we had a great time sipping wine, sharing dishes at the counter, and chatting. This time, I went solo and remembered why I liked this place so much.
They sat me at the counter near the kitchen, where I had a front-row seat to everything. I could see the chefs working and the plating station. Watching them plate each dish was like a show.
The waiter brought great sourdough bread and tiny, salty, and delicious olives with the menu.
For my appetizer, I ordered the smoked eel with light mayo sauce. The eel was tender and flavorful, and the sauce was perfect. I took my time with each bite, alternating with the sourdough to enjoy the flavors.
For my main, I had grilled Goraz (seabream). The presentation was simple and beautiful. The fish was halved and sprinkled with sweet red pepper flakes and garlic. It came with green beans cooked just right and boiled potatoes. The Goraz was tender, the skin crispy and lightly salted—every bite was a pleasure. All the components on the plate worked together.
The highlight was dessert: mashed, baked apple, matcha ice cream, and custard. Sweet, tart, and creamy, it was perfect. I finished with a small but great espresso.
The service at Canalha was excellent. The staff was professional and friendly, just right. They were attentive without being intrusive, which is a big plus when dining solo.
The acoustics are great, and the background music adds to the relaxed vibe. The decor is old-world charm with modern touches. The long counter where I sat was well-lit and comfortable, and the table seating area was cozy and casual.
If you’re dining alone, Canalha is a great choice. The counter seating is perfect for solo diners, with enough privacy to enjoy the restaurant but still be part of the action.
During my visit, I saw a few other solo diners and couples at the counter, which added to the feeling of being welcome.
Canalha has a private room at the back of the restaurant for groups of 8 or more. It’s perfect for special occasions.
Lunch at Canalha is more than just a meal; it’s an experience. Whether you’re dining solo or with friends, the combination of great food, warm service, and cozy atmosphere makes it worth a visit. For women over 50 who love to eat out alone, Canalha is the place to feel at home.
It’s about a 10-minute walk from the MAAT Museum and the Codoaria Nacional Museum. If you feel like a walk, Belem is 25 minutes away, and the path along the water is beautiful.
