Lisbon in the winter: What to Pack and What to Expect
Is winter a good time to visit Lisbon? Absolutely. With mild weather that won’t leave you sweating or shivering, it’s an ideal destination for those who love walking.
For us ladies over 50, this is a win!
Let’s break down what to pack for your Lisbon in the winter trip to ensure you’re stylish, cozy, and prepared for every twist of Lisbon’s winter weather.
Winter in Lisbon is mild, often sunny, with temperatures between 10°C (50°F) and 15°C (59°F).
You’ll get a mix of sunny and cloudy days, with occasional rain. While the weather can be a bit unpredictable, the key is layering. With the right pieces, you can easily adapt to whatever the day brings.
Stick to a color palette. It will be easier to combine your clothes.
For this example, you can choose black, olive green, and red. Another neutral combination can be dark brown, beige, olive green.
Take one thin raincoat or a trench coat and pack a puffer jacket.
Raincoat: A lightweight, waterproof option is essential. My go-to is from Rains—truly waterproof and easy to pack.
Trench Coat: A mid-length trench is practical for windy days and adds a polished touch to your outfits.
Puffer Jacket: Lightweight but warm, perfect for layering. Choose a neutral color or a fun accent to add personality.
Wool Beanie: A must for chilly mornings and evenings. (I love my red one.)
1 pair of black trousers (ideal for evening outings).
1 pair of dark blue jeans.
1 skirt or dark-colored dress.
5 button-down shirts (2 striped, 2 solid, and 1 patterned).
2 long-sleeve t-shirts (great for layering).
3 thermal undershirts (a lifesaver on colder days).
4 pairs of wool socks.
3 stockings (for layering or wearing with your skirt/dress).
Underwear: 10 panties and 3 bras.
1–2 scarves to elevate your outfits and keep warm.
Shoes: Waterproof, non-slip sneakers are a must for Lisbon. For evenings, pack a dressier pair of shoes.
Bag: A crossbody bag is perfect for keeping your things safe and hands-free for photographing.
Here’s a quick guide to styling your packed items for three days – you can repeat things on day 4 and 5.
Day 1
Olive green trench coat.
Dark blue jeans.
Striped shirt layered over a thermal.
Red sweater for a pop of color.
Scarf and crossbody bag.
The thermal and scarf keep you cozy in the morning and evening. As the day warms up, shed a layer and keep exploring.
Day 2
Trench coat.
Black trousers.
Solid-color long-sleeve shirt.
Lightweight puffer jacket.
Scarf.
Day 3
Red sweater and puffer jacket.
Striped shirt.
Blue jeans.
Scarf.
Raincoat (if the forecast hints at rain).
In my younger travel days, I loved packing blazers—they instantly elevated any outfit. These days, I rely on my olive green trench coat. It’s water-resistant, keeps me warm on breezy days, and is easy to carry when the sun comes out.
If you don’t own a trench coat yet, get one that doesn’t wrinkle. It’s versatile and effortlessly stylish—a staple for any Lisbon winter trip.
A good puffer jacket is great for layering.
Choose one that’s lightweight, warm, and neutral enough to pair with everything. Or, if you love a pop of color like I do, go bold!
Red is my accent color of choice—it brightens my neutrals and feels cheerful during cloudy days in Lisbon.
Not necessarily. If your trench coat isn’t waterproof, you can always pick up a small, affordable umbrella once you arrive in Lisbon.
Winter in Lisbon means layering is your best friend. The weather can be unpredictable, but don’t stress—if you forget something, you can always shop locally.
The most important thing is to pack smart, dress for comfort, and enjoy the unique charm of Lisbon in winter.
