How to plan your Lisbon fall-trip packing, for women over 50

Choose a color palette 

I focus on neutral colors and pack a few bright things to change my looks.

One of my favorite group of fall colours for a trip are:  ollive green, black, and white.

A scarf with tones of red  adds color and contrast to my palette. I also take a few larger earrings, a tiny pair and some fun necklaces.  

My fantastic purple and neon green pasticcino bag from Lisbon,  will add cheer to my black evening clothes.

If I need something, I can purchase it during my trip.

Detailed packing list  for Lisbon in the fall

• One lightweight, long, waterproof raincoat.
• One waterproof hat.
• Waterproof sneakers with grooved soles. The sidewalks are slippery.
• One nicer shoe for the evenings: Optional because shoes take up a lot of space.
• One lightweight puffer jacket for the colder evenings.
• One lightweight, roomy fall blazer that is large enough to layer over a sweater or your puffer jacket
• One lightweight sweater for the day.
• Two cotton long sleeve T-shirts
• Three cotton short-sleeve T-shirts or polo shirts Personal note: I like polo shirts because they look dressier
• Two classic button-down cotton shirts
• One jeans or thicker material trouser
• One black trousers for the evenings and more sociable events
• One skirt
• Two or three scarves
• One belt
• Thick and lightweight socks for walking and colder temperatures
• One stocking for a colder night

Skirts or shorts?

When packing for Lisbon in the fall, should bring shorts or a skirt?

I prefer traveling with a skirt rather than shorts or bermudas.

I am a big fan of skirts because you can wear them for sightseeing and change the top for a fancier evening look. 

How to organise your travel clothes for Lisbon in the fall

• Try on all your clothes before you pack.
• Make sure you can wear the sweater and the puffer under the blazer and button down the blazer. 
• Plan for  layers.
• All your clothes should fit nicely and feel comfortable.
• Study your variations and choose the right scarves to add color and to change your looks.

What if you arrive in Lisbon and the weather does not match your weather channel predictions?

National holidays in Lisbon during the fall and winter

• October 5 – Republic Day (Dia da Implantação da República)
• November 1 – All Saints’ Day (Dia de Todos os Santos) – A day of remembrance when many families visit cemeteries.
• November 11 – São Martinho (St. Martin’s Day) – Celebrated more in smaller towns with roasted chestnuts and new wine.
• December 1 – Restoration of Independence Day (Restauração da Independência)
• December 8 – Feast of the Immaculate Conception (Dia da Imaculada Conceição)
• December 25 – Christmas (Natal) – Many shops and restaurants will be closed.

Should you make plans for beach swimming?

You can, but the water is very cold.

Is fall a good time to visit Lisbon?

Absolutely. The city is cooler, making it great for walking and exploring. Outdoor cafés are still lively, and the evenings are just right for a drink on a rooftop terrace.

Are hotels cheaper in the fall?

Not really. Booking early can help you get better deals.

Is the city crowded in the fall?

Lisbon is less crowded than in summer, but it is no longer a “hidden gem.”

Anything else to keep in mind?

• The days shorter, so plan your outdoor activities accordingly.
• Comfortable walking shoes are a must. Lisbon’s hills and cobblestone streets can be tricky.
• Many museums and attractions have reduced hours in the off-season, check schedules ahead of time.
